STORYLINE:
Pope Francis held the traditional liturgy of the Passion inside St Peter's Basilica on the afternoon of Good Friday.
Wearing bright-red robes to symbolise the blood shed by Jesus, the pontiff laid down on the floor of the cathedral at the beginning of the ceremony.
Pope Francis listened in silence to a homily by the papal preacher Father Raniero Cantalamessa and other readings focused on the torture and suffering Jesus endured before his execution.
The Pope was also helped by aides to kneel for a moment in quiet reflection, with his head bowed and hands folded.
Later on Friday, pilgrims and tourists will join the Pope at Rome's Colosseum for the Way of the Cross procession, which will reflect on the suffering of Jesus as well as on the plight of migrants.
